Discovering the Layers of History in a Grade 2 Building Emmerson Critchley Ltd is thrilled to announce our latest and very special project: the restoration and renovation of the Greggs outlet in Bury St Edmunds, a Grade 2 historic building steeped in rich history. This project isn’t just a renovation; it’s a journey back in time, uncovering stories and preserving heritage.

A Glimpse Into the Past The building now housing Greggs has been a cornerstone of Bury St Edmunds’ commercial history. A photograph from the remarkable collection of over 4,000 historical images by the Spantons and the Jarmans showcases the site as Oliver & Son, a grocer and tea dealer, in a bygone era. What’s more fascinating is the possibility that the original gothic glazing bars from the late 18th century still grace the shop front today.

Embracing the Challenge At Emmerson Critchley Ltd, we understand the importance of preserving such a rich history. Our team is dedicated to retaining and restoring as much of the original architecture and design as possible, especially elements like the potentially original gothic glazing bars. It’s not just about maintaining a building; it’s about preserving a piece of history.

Sharing Our Journey But this isn’t just our journey; it’s a story we want to share with everyone. As we peel back the layers of history in this iconic building, we’ll be documenting every discovery and milestone on our social media channels. Expect regular updates, intriguing finds, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the restoration process.

A Collaborative Effort This project is made possible thanks to the collaboration with various local historians and the Bury St Edmunds Past and Present Society. Their invaluable input helps us understand the building’s historical context and ensure that our restoration efforts are in line with preserving its heritage.
