Emmerson Critchley Ltd is one of the leading building companies in Suffolk, with unrivalled expertise in traditional building techniques for both period properties and modern new build projects. From our base at 40 Eastgate Street in Bury St. Edmunds, we have spent years building a team and a reputation that homeowners, architects and conservation officers across the East of England trust to do the job properly.
Emmerson's Journey
Emmerson's journey to becoming a successful builder was not without its challenges. Having left school early, he found his calling as a carpentry apprentice. He later joined a building restoration company, where he developed a deep interest in traditional building materials and techniques, particularly the use of lime mortar on the period properties that fill Suffolk's villages and town centres.
That early grounding in heritage work shaped everything that followed.
Emmerson eventually branched out on his own, starting small and taking on the kind of jobs that taught him every part of the trade. The company that grew from that beginning is the same one we run today: a team of skilled craftspeople offering everything from small repairs to full restorations and ground up new builds, with the same care given to each.
